Smart Card Functionality
These are some of the ways that Smart Cards are used in conjunction with Sun Ray and Solaris Smart Card Framework.

Using a smart card middleware provider, customers may manage their cards. This includes functions like managing their PIN, loading certificates, storing static passwords and other utilities. Some middleware may contain a PKCS#11 interface that works with Browsers, mail clients, and other applications to allow for Digital Signatures, message or mail encryption, and secure transactions.

In addition, Smart Cards may be used with enterprise authentication systems to control the access of users, securely from inside or outside the corporate network. A PAM or pluggable authentication module would work in conjunction with the login. A user would insert their smart card, enter their PIN to unlock the smart card, and the PAM would interact with the smartcard to authenticate the user to the network.
